Tenuta Morciano is a Boutique Winery founded with the intention of making exceptional Italian wines. It is the result of a decade-long global quest to identify the perfect terroir, and build on the founder’s extensive international experience as a geologist. Exhaustive research was carried out around Orvieto to gain a deep understanding of the nuances inherent to the wine region’s terroir. Over the course of an entire year, numerous properties around Orvieto were evaluated before finally discovering a south-west facing property east of Orvieto where temperature, water retention, a combination of sandy and clay soils with a huge presence of marine fossils share many similarities with the best wine regions in the world.
Since completing the purchase of Tenuta Morciano in 2020, the winemaking team has taken a number of steps to produce world-class wines that showcase the great terroir and versatility of the region. One of the first priorities was to select the very best vineyards allowing for focused winemaking efforts on exceptional vineyard sites.

The perfect terroir
The terroir is comprised of calcareous sands and clays which were deposited by an ancient ocean during the Pliocene period 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago. During this time, the area was covered by a warm ocean with abundant marine life and several species of fossil shells were abundant within the soil. The deposition of these sediments predates the pyroclastic lava flows on which the town of Orvieto sits which were erupted from the Bolsena volcano approximately 315,000 years ago.

The Estate sits in Orvieto’s world renowned wine country. Located on the northern flank of the Tiber river valley at between 160 and 235m above sea level, our breathtaking location and renowned winemaker allow us to create and produce wines of exceptional quality.
Winemaker Alessandro Leoni is the creative genius behind Tenuta Morciano wines. He was recently featured in Decanter magazine as one of the top wine consultants in Italy (Decanter Italy 2022 p38). Alessandro’s expertise and craftsmanship result in premium wines that are bold, balanced and delectable.
