The Vineyards

The first vineyard was planted back in 1988 with a mission to make high-quality wines. The southwest facing aspect and moderate slope combined with our calcareous sandy and clay-rich soils yield intensely flavourful and complex grapes with complex aromas.

Elevation

The fifteen separate vineyards that comprise Tenuta Morciano are located between 160 and 235m above sea level and are located in sloping ground that is well drained with primarily southern and south western exposure.

Varieties

White varietals:
Grechetto, Trebbiano, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Verdello
Red varietals:
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Montepulciano

Climate

Tenuta Morciano’s distinctive microclimate offers great wide day-night temperature swings. The hot days allow the grapes to develop intense flavor, while the cool nights create great structure and balance.

Soil

A combination of sands and clays that are rich in fossilized shells and oysters from marine deposits of the Pliocene period (5.3 to 2.6 million years ago) makes our soil ideally suited to creating outstanding red wines at sunnier lower elevations and vibrant, crisp white wines and higher elevations.

The abundant shells result in elevated levels of both calcium and magnesium carbonates in the soil, resulting in slightly alkaline soils which promote acidity in the grapes. Calcareous soils are cool, with good water retention which allow the vines’ root system to penetrate deeply and provide excellent drainage.

A passion from the vineyard to the cellar

Our winemaking philosophy

A love, appreciation and respect for the craft of making fine wine underscores every detail at Tenuta Morciano and is embedded in all that we do, from the vineyard to the cellar.

As stewards of this incredible piece of agricultural land with a history of grape production and wine making extending back almost 3000 years to the Etruscan civilization, we endeavour to harness the full potential of the land to cultivate the best possible fruit and employ minimal intervention of the wine. We employ a combination of traditional practices and harvest our grapes by hand ensuring that the grapes remain intact until they are pressed just hours after being harvested. We also employ leading-edge technologies to preserve the beautiful, natural character of our wines.

Once the grapes are harvested, our winemakers gather to select, age, taste, blend and decide what goes into every bottle.
We are committed to sustainable, environmentally-friendly farming and winemaking practices, that show respect to the land and that role of agriculture in the environmental cycle. The treatments in the vineyard are reduced to the bare minimum, through an obsessive attention to climatic trends and the health of the vines.
